Formation & Leadership

Kalundu Study Centre

Our History

A Legacy of Formation Since 1972

The Kalundu Study Centre has been in existence since 1972 when the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) found it important to establish an accommodation facility for the Religious Sisters who were studying at the University of Zambia. With the help of Misereor, the hostels were constructed for the sisters as a response to the request by the Zambia Association of Sisterhoods.

This initial need was expanded in 1974 to include a programme for the formation of novices in the second year as well as the preparation for their first profession. Sr. Alice was the founder of the Centre.

Sr. Josephine Mulenga, who served as Chairperson from 1977 to 1981, introduced the formation and leadership course. During this time, Sr. Joyce Meyer served as Secretary for ZAS. At the AMECEA sisters’ conference, seminars were organized for all missionaries coming to Africa for enculturation, emphasizing the importance of learning African values and advocacy for women and children.

Based on this experience, the Centre decided to introduce the Formation and Leadership Course for Formators in 1977, which targeted both national and continental participants. As of 2025, the centre has trained 1,220 sisters in Leadership and Formation from all over Africa.
